The three-part model for coding causes and mechanisms of healthcare-related adverse events

Abstract: ICD-11 provides a promising new way to capture healthcare-related harm or injury. In this paper, we elaborate on the framework for describing healthcare-related events where there is a presumed causal link between an event and underlying healthcare-related factors. The three-part model for describing healthcare-related harm or injury in ICD-11 consists of (1) a healthcare-related activity that is the cause of injury or other harm (selected from Chapter 23 of ICD-11); (2) a mode or mechanism of injury or harm, … Show more

“…Disease conditions were evaluated based on the International Classification of Diseases, 11th vs. ICD-11 ( 20 ). Accordingly, the primary diagnosis codes of mental illness were as follows: F0, organic mental disorders including symptomatic disorders and dementia; F1, mental and behavioral disorders due to the use of psychoactive substances; F2, schizophrenia, schizotypal, and delusional disorders; F3, mood [affective] disorders; F4, neurotic, stress-related, and somatoform disorders; F5, behavioral syndromes associated with physiological disturbances and physical factors; F6, disorders of adult personality and behavior; F7, mental retardation; and F8–9, others.…”

“…ICD-11 is no exception. There are indeed conceptual models underlying various elements of ICD-11 (e.g., 1. a 3-part framework for describing healthcare-related harms—described in an article in this series [ 1 ]; 2. a framework for categorizing different extension code types—also described in a companion article [ 2 ]; and 3. conceptual grouping of disease concepts in each of the disease content chapters of the classification). A companion article on ICD-11 architecture and structure provides more detail on conceptual elements of the classification [ 3 ].…”

“…ICD-11 enables adding detail to coded entities using several mechanisms. Healthcare-related harms coding in ICD-11 involves cluster coding of injury, cause, and mode, known as the 3-part model [ 5 ].…”
