The Three‐Dimensional Arrangement of the Myocytes Aggregated Together Within the Mammalian Ventricular Myocardium

Abstract: Although myocardial architecture has been investigated extensively, as yet no evidence exists for the anatomic segregation of discrete myocardial pathways. We performed post-mortem diffusion tensor imaging on 14 pig hearts. Pathway tracking was done from 22 standardized voxel groups from within the left ventricle, the left ventricular papillary muscles, and the right ventricular outflow tract. We generated pathways with comparable patterns in the different hearts when tracking from all chosen voxels. We were u… Show more

“…The diffusion data were imported into our custom-made analysis software as used in previous contributions from our group (8,9,36). Within each zone, the three eigenvectors of the diffusion tensor were exported from a transmural region of interest measuring 3 × 3 voxels.…”

“…In addition to the studies of cell differentiation and phenotype, the applications of bioprinting include: Creating specific cell-to-cell patterns that mimic in vivo patterns of cellular interaction, such as the neuronal networks [30,31] ; tool for facilitating basic biology research on specific cell-cell or cell-ECM interactions [30,32] ; cell/tissue bases sensors for chemical, drug, and toxicity testing [33] ; and tissue engineering for regenerative medicine, such as the fabrication of 2D cellular organizations that can be stacked into 3D scaffolds and, as demonstrated here, to influence stem cell differentiation on a biomaterial [7,11,14,15,28,31] .…”

“…It is also known that the myocardial fibers of ventricular wall consist of chain-like connected cardiomyocytes either sequentially or in parallel (via intercalary discs) [16]. In turn, the fibers connected in parallel are combined into bundles that form segments of the ventricular wall.…”
