The Thermostabilization of Polyoxymethylene Through Amine Treatment

Abstract: The thermostabilization of polyoxymethylene (POM) through amine treatment was studied by the measurements of isothermal weight loss, formaldehyde emission amount, balance torque, multiple processing and long-term aging analysis. The results showed that due to its chemical property, triethanolamine played the role of deactivator for residual initiator of POM, the absorbent for formaldehyde and formic acid produced by POM degradation, and it also helped to remove the unstable end groups of POM. Melting treatment… Show more

“…It is well known that the adding of stabilizers can slow down the thermal ageing of POM [ 6 ], the onset melting temperature ( T 0 ) is a common method to judge the beginning of stabilizers consumption [ 3 ]. As shown in figure 7 , the change of the onset melting temperature indicates that there is no stabilizer consumption in the whole ageing process, because if there is stabilizer consumption, the onset melting temperature will not rise again [ 7 , 36 ].…”

“…1b). Besides, it has been reported that the mixture of polyoxymethylene with amine functional groups produces a synergistic effect in reducing formaldehyde [19,36]. As can be seen, at a low concentration of propylamine (1 and 2 wt.%), the formaldehyde emission of the POM-PA blends decreases.…”

“…For polymer substrates, Sun et al demonstrated that the addition of hexamethylenediamine (HA) and triethanolamine (TEA) help reduced the formaldehyde emission in POM [18,19]. It has been suggested that the addition of an amine group serves three functions during melt treatment of POM; (1) absorbing the formaldehyde by an addition reaction, (2) neutralising the formic acid from the oxidised formaldehyde, and (3) promoting the hydrolytic degradation of the unstable end groups of POM into stable groups [18,19]. Mantaranon et al [20] investigated a simple reactive blending of POM with bisphenol-A and aniline [20].…”
