The thermal decomposition of 2,2′‐azobis‐(2‐methyl‐5‐hydroxy‐valeronitril) and its phenyl isocyanate derivative

Abstract

The thermal decomposition kinetics of 2,2'-azo-bis-(2-methyl-5-hydroxy-valeronitrile) was studied in isobutyl methyl ketone, 1Q-dioxane and cyclohexanone at 61,71, and 81 "C by applying ultraviolet absorption technique. The thermal decomposition of the phenyl isocyanate capped product of this azo-compound was also studied in isobutyl methyl ketone at the same three temperatures. The overall rate expressions for decomposition of these azo-initiators in various solvents are reported. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:Die Kinetik des thermischen Zerfalls von 2,2'-Azo-bis-(2-methyl-5-hydroxy-valeronitril) wurde in Isobutylmethylketon, 1,4-Dioxan und Cyclohexanon bei 61, 71 und 81 "C UV-spektroskopisch untersucht. Die Zerfallskinetik des mit Phenylisocyanat umgesetzten Azoinitiators in Isobutylmethylketon wurde ebenfalls bestimmt. Fiir beide Initiatoren wurden die Arrhenius-Parameter berechnet.
