The therapeutic role of lasers in primary localized cutaneous amyloidosis: a systematic review

Abstract: With the investigation of the efficacy of laser therapy in primary localized amyloidosis(PLCA) only recently starting to materialize, we aimed to review the currently available studies of laser therapy in the management of the disease. We searched PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane, and ProQuest online databases with a specified search strategy, assessed the quality of each study, and then extracted the eligible data. Five RCTs(randomized controlled trials), one non-randomized controlled trial, t… Show more

“…Based on our literature review, reports on treatment of macular amyloidosis are limited to case reports, and studies of patients treated without a control group 2 . Trials are almost about different types of laser therapy 3 . So, limited randomized clinical trial study is performed on using topical agents for treating macular amyloidosis.…”

“…The current concept varies from topical, intralesional, or physical treatment with various efficacy. A variety of treatment modalities including topical corticosteroids, topical dimethyl sulfoxide, topical retinoids, oral cyclophosphamide, oral colchicine, phototherapy, laser therapy, surgical intervention, and transcutaneous nerve stimulation have been used, but no particular treatment is effective for all cases 2–4 …”

“…If the lesions persist, whether it is a localized LA, it is possible to substitute or add topical drugs to surgical removal (electrodesiccation, a special technique called 'scraping with the scalpel', and dermabrasion) or laser removal [13][14][15]. If it is diffuse LA, on the other hand, phototherapy (narrow-band UVB and photochemotherapy with PUVA) and/or systemic drug treatment (oral antihistamines, DMSO, acitretin or other retinoids, cyclophosphamide, and cyclosporine) can be used [3,[16][17][18].…”

“…Many publications have shown the efficiency of laser therapy on PLCA [38]. Carbon dioxide laser has demonstrated successful clinical outcomes in the treatment of MA and LA lesions [39,40].…”
