The present state of the theory of the ionic conductance of alkali halide crystals is briefly reviewed and a critical appraisal of the experimental results made in the light of this theory. It is concluded that sufficient experimental data to provide a convincing test of the Lidiard 1 theory are not yet available. New experimental results on the d.c. and a.c. conductance of potassium chloride crystals and of KCl crystals doped with strontium chloride are described. These results are not in complete accord with the simple association theory and qualitatively favour the interpretation based on nonnearest neighbour interactions. A value of 0 3 f0.1 eV is deduced for 5, where -5 is the free energy of association of complexes, the wide limits being set by the curious temperature dependence found for 5. Numerical values for the heat of formation of a Schottky pair of vacancies and for the activation energy for electrical migration of cation and anion vacancies are deduced. These are, respectively, h = 2-30 eV, Ah1 = 0.75 eV, Ah2 = 1.8 eV.(2) Two extreme cases may be distinguished: at high temperatures in a pure crystal, c < xo and therefore while at low temperatures, c % XO, x1 = x2 = xo (intrinsic region), x1 = c (structure sensitive region).

Von P e t e r S i i p t i t xMit 10 Abbildungen Inhaltsiibersieht Mit Hilfc radioaktiver Isotope wurde der Einbau geloster Beimengungen in Silberhalogenidkristallen bei der Einkristallzuchtung nach B r i d g m a n verfolgt. Die effektiven Verteilungskoeffizienten wurden ermittelt fur Cd-, Zn-, Cu-, Na-, K-, Rb-und S-Beimengungen in AgCl und AgBr und fur Ca-und Br-Beimengungen in AgC1. Das System AgCl + CdCl, wurde fur kleine Cd-Konzentrationen eingehend untersucht ; neben der Abhangigkeit des effektiven Verteilungskoeffizienten von der Wachstumsgeschwindigkeit wurde auch eine Abhangigkeit von der Beimengungskonzentration festgestellt . Eine analoge Konzentrationsabhangigkeit des effektiven Verteilungskoeffizienten bei Na-Zusatz wurde nicht gefunden. Die Deutung dieses Effcktes mit Hilfe der Fehlordnungstheorie ist nur bei Beimengungskonzentrationen ( > 0 , l M01-y~) moglich. Cd 115 m 43 d CdCl,, CdBr, da unlosliche Bestandteile (Koh-Ce 45 1 g: lenstoff, Silikate usw.) am Ein-Zn 65 ZnCI,, ZnBr, lauf zur Kapillare an der Glas-Cu 64 12,8 h CuCl,. CuBr, wand haften bleiben.
