Until today, iron gall ink is classified as an exceptional underdrawing material for paintings. Its study and definite identification is usually based on invasive analysis. This article presents a new non-destructive approach using micro-X-ray fluorescence scanning (MA-XRF), LED-excited IRR (LEDE-IRR) based on a narrow wavelength-range of infrared radiation (IR) for illumination and stereomicroscopy for studying and visualising iron gall ink underdrawings. To assess possibilities and limits of these analytical techniques, the approach was tested on panel paintings by Hans Holbein the Elder and Giovanni Battista Cima da Conegliano. Results are compared to invasive examinations on cross-sections using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX). The holistic setup could successfully visualise iron gall ink underdrawings, allowing to harness the formerly invisible underdrawing lines for interdisciplinary studies.

“…The lack of contrast in the XRR reveals the key drawback of this transmission mode technique; the cradling, a latticework of reinforcing wooden beams at the back of the painting, disturbs the readability of the image, making the high X-ray absorbing area hardly visible and difficult to interpret. In the past, several ways were suggested to remove/reduce the visually distracting effects of cradling in XRR images of panel paintings such as physically filling the voids with a material similar in X-ray density to wood [132,133] or digitally manipulating the XRR image, either by manually using a raster graphics editor (such as Photoshop) [134], or by employing an automated algorithm (such as Platypus) [134]. In this case, Platypus effectively reduced the impact of the cradling on the XRR image (see Appendix C: Figure C.1), thus improving the visibility of the contrast difference between plank 6 and the original planks.…”

In materials science, it has significantly advanced understanding of microstructure and material properties, facilitating the development of novel materials. In environmental monitoring, infrared microscopy plays a crucial role in assessing microplastics and atmospheric pollutants, supporting environmental protection efforts. In art preservation, the technique offers valuable insights into the composition and deterioration of historical artworks.
