The Taxonomy and Habitats of Fusarium Species From Tropical and Temperate Regions

Abstract: The present taxonomic study involved approximately 1200 isolates of Fusarium which were received by the writer from time to time each year during the past 25 years from tropical and temperate regions. The various isolates originated in 59 geographic areas. Approximately 90% of the isolates were obtained from a total of 160 species of host plants which included cultivated and non-cultivated plants. The cultivated plants included the chief agricultural crops grown in tropical and temperate regions, respectively.… Show more

“…Since then, and as a result of increased knowledge of variation in fungi, further advances in the taxonomy of Fusarium species have occurred. Other taxonomic systems have been proposed by Gerlach and Nirenberg (71), Raillo (182,183), Bilai (23,24), Joffe (97), Snyder and Hansen (209)(210)(211), Messiaen and Cassini (138), Matuo (133), Gordon (73)(74)(75)(76)(77)(78)(79)(80), Booth (28), and Nelson et al (154), and these will be discussed in detail later in this paper. It is essential to remember that all so-called modem systems of Fusaium taxonomy are based on the work of Wollenweber and Reinking (255).…”

“…In their opinion, these changes were justified because many of the varieties and forms may have been cultural variants or mutants. The publication of Nelson et al (154) is illustrated with photographs of macroconidia, microconidia, conidiophores, and chlamydospores produced on carnation leaf agar (54 Gordon (78,80), and Booth (28) (Fig. 22) and the mode of formation, whether it be singly, in false heads only, or in false heads and chains (Fig.…”

“…The classification proposed by BOOTH (1977) for the identification of Fusarium species was adopted for the present study. This classification is based on GORDON's (GORDON 1960), as this uses a large number of parameters and it provides an information more complete of the studied species. This classification system is easy to handle, the morphology of spores being one main feature in the identification according to BOOTH (1971BOOTH ( , 1977.…”
