The tactile triangle: a design research framework demonstrated through tactile comparisons of textile materials

Abstract: Tactile experiences of textile materials are difficult to communicate and elicit. To interrogate this space we propose the tactile triangle, a framework to facilitate systematic analysis and comparison of tactile experiences. The three levels reflect different aspects of tactile experience and possible methods to capture them: physical properties, in which human senses or objective testing measure fabric properties; the perceptual space level in which triadic comparisons reveal combinations of various dimensio… Show more

“…In view of the product form design, activity begins with the designer's ideographic communication, and finally depend on the user's feelings and understanding, the core of which lies in expression and communication. Some studies mainly involve tactile comparisons of textile materials [68], wine aroma [69], pearl quality [70], the aesthetic characteristics of artistic works [71], etc., especially in sensory evaluation [72][73][74], these studies have demonstrated that emotion perception and evaluation vocabulary vary with the difference in professional level. In fact, the demands of the designer have been built into the product design, which is different from the meaning of the product in the eyes of the user.…”

“…Only one VAS straight line was used for collecting selfreports of each perceived stress level along with each session to make participants easily remember and compare their previous scores as shown in Figure 4c. The comparison lets us combine a numerical type of approach to self-reporting with a ranking one as comparison is generally more reliable that simple quantization of a subjective state [43][44][45]. The labels in We take an array of the R-R intervals (Figure 2c) and the 1Hz-sampled thermal directionality samples (Figure 3c) as low-level features representing each modality throughout this paper.…”

“…Only one VAS straight line was used for collecting self--reports of each perceived stress level along with each session to make participants easily remember and compare their previous scores as shown in Figure 4c. The comparison lets us combine a numerical type of approach to self---reporting with a ranking one as comparison is generally more reliable that simple quantization of a subjective state [43][44][45]. The labels in Figure 4c have been added to figure by the researcher to clarify their reference to each of the tasks (R: Rest, Se: Stroop easy, Sd: Stroop difficult, Me: Math easy, Md: Math difficult).…”

“…This is to help participants easily compare stress scores they report between sessions as shown in Figure 5c. This approach combines a numerical approach to self-reporting with a ranking one, as ranking is generally more reliable than simple quantization of a subjective state [65][66][67]. The labels in Figure 5c…”
