The systemic hallmarks of cancer

Abstract: Cancer is not just a lump of cells that divide, invade, and spread randomly, but rather a multi-layered precisely tuned process that requires the participation of the whole organism. There is an urgent need to zoom-out from the cellular and the local stromal view and broaden our perspective by including the whole organism level. Geographically separated cancer tissues communicate between themselves, forming a system that interacts with the rest of the organism through cancer induced systemic pathogenic network… Show more

“…It is confirmed that APC acts as an antagonist of the Wnt signaling pathway in several cancer types, and the low expression of APC promotes tumor progression. Besides, it is also involved in other processes, like cell migration and adhesion, transcriptional activation, and apoptosis (29,30). The data and results from different databases and datasets showed that both METTL14 and ZC3H13 had high correlation coefficients with APC (R > 0.6, P < 0.05) ( Figures 8A-F).…”

“…The constitutive expression of certain transcription factors enables cancer cells to gain these abilities. Just like organisms, cancer is highly complex and multi-layered which relies on a network of interactions at cellular, tissular and organismic levels [65]. The ability to break away from a primary tumour via metastasis to form multiple tumours in geographically separated tissues truly highlights its extensiveness.…”

“…The ability to break away from a primary tumour via metastasis to form multiple tumours in geographically separated tissues truly highlights its extensiveness. Cancer achieves this by interacting with multiple body systems [65]. It is often described as a systemic disease whereby the tumour-body interaction results in the primary tumour colonising host organs by expressing several factors including transcription factors.…”

“…cally, experimentally derived data assembled over more than a decade encourage the concept of the cancer system developed by the geographically differentiated cancer tissues (the primary tumor, the local, and the distant metastasis) [1,3].…”

“…The systemic standpoint should be indefinite up to stage IV cancers clinically. When the tumors are localized in many cases, and systemic effects appear, a notable proportion of cancers is incurable [1,4].…”
