The Systemic Effects of Endometriosis

Abstract: Endometriosis is a condition defined by the presence of endometrial glands and stroma in ectopic locations. While the most commonly seen symptoms of the disease are pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, and infertility, endometriosis has also systemic effects in multiple organ systems. Here, we review literature describing closely associated comorbidities including cardiovascular disease, cancers, autoimmune disease, psychiatric conditions, and metabolism/body weight. We examine the pathophysiology and hypothesized mecha… Show more

“…Women with this disease are more likely to have depression, anxiety, autoimmune disease, and a lower average body mass index. 154 The regenerative ability of endometrium and use of circulating stem cells may allow for regeneration after menstruation and enhance fertility; however, it may predispose menstruating animals to endometriosis and associated disease. Endometriosis can be considered a systemic disease in which widespread cell trafficking contributes to the pathophysiology.…”

“…Our findings on the sizeable impact of comorbidities on healthcare spending among women with endometriosis underscore two important points for providers and payers: this patient population exhibits pronounced heterogeneity in expected resource use, and there are potential benefits of comorbidity prevention and early detection efforts. Additional implications of these findings for clinical practice depend largely on the relationship between endometriosis diagnosis and development of subsequent comorbidities [ 29 ]. Selection of the 22 comorbidities to study was based on epidemiological evidence of endometriosis–comorbidity associations.…”

“…The hypothesis that stem cells contribute to the establishment and progression of endometriotic lesions has gained wide acceptance [ 4 , 10 , 11 , 42 , 48 , 49 ]. However, the available direct evidence to confirm this hypothesis remains limited.…”
