The system of professions

Abstract: Abbott's seminal (1988) work in sociology, "The System of Professions", has new relevance to the information professions in the 21st century. His model portrays professions locked in competition for jurisdiction over solvable problems, and librarianship figures prominently as a case exploration.

“…Simultaneously, for academia, the framework could be used to step beyond Abbott's own work (Abbott 1988), to facilitate, for instance, an investigation of the roots and magnitudes of gender and race stratification amid the emerging information profession of management accounting. Since the expounding power of Abbott's theory has been historical (Abbott 1988), its innovative, avant-garde value remains an open question (Furness 2019). “…Naturally, data science and IT functions also have a decisive part to play concerning data (Heinzelmann 2018). All of the professions mentioned above are entering the expansive category of emerging information professions (Vasarhelyi et al 2015;Furness 2019;Moll and Yigitbasioglu 2019;Wongsim et al 2019) and might have or inquire about a role in the area of innovative data sources. Besides, any reluctance or failure of the profession to pursue new advances in data leaves open the likelihood of MAs being marginalized in regard to decision-making, with data scientists, for instance, playing a more significant role (ICAEW 2019;Moll and Yigitbasioglu 2019;Möller et al 2020).…”

“…Before Abbott, theories of professionalization mostly focused on how professions were organized, how much power they held, and how they developed unidirectionally. On the other hand, Abbott argued that to understand the progress of a profession, we must consider its social and professional surroundings, and the process in which it interacts with those surrounding [26][27][28].…”
