SummaryFluoride prevents dental cavities, stimulates bone mineralisation and decreases the melting temperature of glasses and is therefore an interesting component of bioactive glasses for use as dental or orthopaedic biomaterials. However, when designing new glass compositions, the structural role of fluoride in the glass needs to be better understood. We have characterised a glass series in the system SiO 2 -P 2 O 5 -CaO-Na 2 O with increasing concentrations of CaF 2 . Network connectivity was fixed at 2.13 by adding CaF 2 while the ratio of all other components was kept constant. 19

Primary crystallization field of cuspidine (3CaO · 2SiO 2 · CaF 2 ) has been experimentally determined in the 2CaO · SiO 2 -SiO 2 -CaF 2 system by quenching method and differential thermal analysis (DTA). Hermetically closed platinum capsules were used as a sample container to prevent fluorine loss in the form of HF and SiF 4 by reaction of CaF 2 with moisture or SiO 2 for quenching experiments. Combining the present study with the partial phase diagrams previously reported, the whole phase diagram of the CaO-SiO 2 -CaF 2 system has been developed. Cuspidine equilibrates with (2CaO · SiO 2 ) 2 CaF 2 , CaO · SiO 2 , 3CaO · 2SiO 2 , 2CaO · SiO 2 and CaF 2 in solid state. Cuspidine coexists with liquid phases at temperatures between 1 387 K and 1 680 K.

The solubility-temperature phase diagrams have been analysed for calcium and barium silicate solutions and for calcium, strontium and barium titanate solutions in the metal chloride melts. These systems are typical binary metal salt mixtures with no solid solution or compound formation. Activity coefficients were estimated from log solubility v reciprocal temperature plots and the anion polymerisation numbers were estimated from these coefficients. The metal silicate systems are non-ideal at silicate mole fractions from 0.1 to 0.8 : the solubilities a t any temperature are appreciably greater than the ideal values determined from the temperatures and enthalpies of metal silicate fusion : the calcium silicatesystems contain upto 50 percent trisilicate chains, while the barium silicate systems contain upto 100 percent trisilicate chains and significant amounts of tetrasilicate chains. The metal titanate systems are practically ideal a t titanate mole fractions from 0.01 to 0.3 and possibly upto < 0.6; the solubilities a t any temperature are then determined by the temperatures snd enthalpies of metal titanate fusion, only.
