The synthesis of cadmium sulfide nanoplatelets using a novel continuous flow sonochemical reactor

Abstract: A continuous flow sonochemical reactor was developed capable of producing metastable cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoplatelets with thicknesses at or below 10nm. The continuous flow sonochemical reactor included the passive in-line micromixing of reagents prior to sonochemical reaction. Synthesis results were compared with those from reactors involving batch conventional heating and batch ultrasound-induced heating. The continuous sonochemical synthesis was found to result in high aspect ratio hexagonal platelets of… Show more

“…In 2002, Nakamura, Edel and their co‐workers reported the synthesis of CdS and CdSe from microreaction routes, respectively, which introduced fast mixing and heating progresses. Nowadays many semiconductor QDs have been prepared via continuous microreactors, including CdSe,76b,146 CdS, InP, CdTe,72b PbS, PbSe, Ag 2 S, AgInS 2 , CuInS 2 , CuInSe 2 , ZnSe,74a SnTe,52b and GaN, as well as carbon dots . Typical reaction processes with oil bath or electric bars as heaters are shown in Figure a,b .…”

“…Continuous flow reactors can be utilised in the synthesis of sonicated photocatalysts for industrial purposes as batch reactors are difficult to scale-up. Palanisamy et al [117] developed a continuous flow sonochemical reactor for the continuous production of CdS nanoplatelets with thicknesses not exceeding 10 nm with a particle size ranging from 20 to 0.5 μm after 1 h of synthesis. The synthesised nanoplatelets were compared to those from batch reactors including conventional heating and ultrasound assisted heating.…”

“…The peaks are well-defined which indicates a high crystallinity of the sample. The obtainment of one or the other phase depends on the method of preparation [33][34][35][36]. Although the diffractograms for both structures show almost coincident peaks; the peak at 31.8º is indicative of the cubic or zinc blende structure [33].…”
