The synthesis and properties of isocyanate-based polyimide foam composites containing MWCNTs of various contents and diameters

Abstract: PIFs were synthesized using in situ polymerization from PAPI, PMDA, and MWCNTs (0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 wt%) functionalized with –OH; the diameters were 10–20 nm, 20–30 nm, and >50 nm.

“…14 To examine the merits of this work, the fire-resistant property is compared with that of previously reported isocyanate-based PIFs. As shown in Figure 8b, the previous counterparts included the PIF modified by silica aerogel (PIF/ SA), 14 aramid honeycomb core (PIF/ARHC), 27 tri (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (PIF/TCPP), 28 graphene oxide (PIF/ GO), 11 multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PIF/MWCNT), 29 graphite (PIF/graphite), 30 and vermiculite (PIF/vermiculite). 31 Overall, the PIF/SiO 2 -8 composite prepared in this work had the highest LOI value.…”

“…The increased MWCNTs content might have led to a tighter arrangement of the polymer chains, limiting water absorption. 35,36 The MWCNTs@PC/KC/PAAc nanocomposite with 0.15 wt% MWCNTs content exhibited the highest swelling percentage. This composition was selected as it provided a greater number of available active sites on the network structure, which is important for effective adsorption.…”

“…35 Inorganic fillers not only improve the morphology and physical properties of foaming materials, but also act as nucleating agents in the LDPE/HDPE foam process, resulting in a decrease in cell size and an increase in cell density. 36 CSW shows a fiber-shaped single crystal with many excellent characteristics, such as high stiffness, high strength, excellent heat resistance and low cost, and is widely used as a reinforcing filler in plastic, paint and rubber. 37,38 Nevertheless, CSW is an inorganic filler, while PE is an organic matter; the compatibility of these two materials is generally poor, which may fail to form a well-bonded interface between CSW and the PE matrix, and thus may deteriorate the properties of organic-inorganic foaming materials.…”
