The sustainable transport pathway: A holistic strategy of Five Transformations

Abstract: In this paper, a holistic strategy of the “Five Transformations” is introduced to offer a comprehensive and synergetic theory to tackle various daunting challenges faced by the transport sector and ultimately pave the way to sustainable transport. The Five Transformations span across city development, the economy, vehicle technology, modal-split and lifestyles at various geographical scales. Building on the current literature and empirical evidence, this paper advocates for fundamental changes in all aspects o… Show more

“…This study shows that NO 2 column density changes were not associated with public transport closure. The emphasis on social distancing in COVID-19 may foster the return of an automobile-oriented society to bring back air pollution, such as NO 2 and PM 2.5 , which is detrimental to the health of the urban population ( Loo and Tsoi, 2018 ). It is thus important to revitalize a safe and healthy environment for public transport and other active transport modes.…”

“…The "Five Transformations" concept [40] indicates a way to definitively achieve sustainable transport, through the enumeration of transformations needed to promote sustainability in transport: city, economy, vehicle technology, modal division (i.e., the percentage distribution of daily average displacements by type of transport), and lifestyle. The intention is to educate the new generation so that, in the future, everyone has a more sustainable lifestyle.…”

“…Dense and mixed use urban development can contribute to the goal of greenhouse gas emission reductions, especially if oriented towards public transport systems (Banister, 2011;Schwanen, Banister, & Anable, 2011). Thus, consideration of land use configurations and policies is indispensable in promoting sustainable transport (Loo & Tsoi, 2018). Increased vehicle efficiency will not solve the issue of transport-related emissions if separation of urban functions, suburbanization, and car dependence prevail (Chapman, 2007).…”
