The susceptibility of pea cultivars to pea seed‐borne mosaic virus infection and virus seed transmission in the UK

Abstract: The reaction of 25 UK pea cultivars to pea seedbornc mosaic virus (PSbMV) was studied in lhe glasshouse. All cultivars proved to be susceptible. When leaf or tendril samples from inoculated plant' wereanalysed, it was found that most combining culuvars had a lower virus content as measured byA4fIj' values in ELISA. than garden and vining cultivars, and that garden and vining cultivars had a simHllr virus content. Seed transmission of PSbMV in 20 cultivars ranged from OOft-t in cvs Maro, Princess an.d" Progreta… Show more

“…and chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), as well as Vicia and Lathyrus species (Hampton & Mink, 1975;Makkouk et al, 1993). The seed transmission rate in pea depends on virus isolate, pea cultivar, time of inoculation and environmental conditions (Hampton & Mink, 1975;Khetarpal & Maury, 1987;Kohnen et al, 1995;Wang et al, 1993). We have analysed two isolates of PSbMV, DPD1 and NY, which differ in several biological properties.…”

“…An isolate of PSbMV, PSbMV-28, originally derived from a PSbMV-infected seed of Pisum sativum cv. Waverex (Wang et al, 1992b) was maintained on, and purified (Wang et al, 1992a) Cross-pollination experiments. Healthy plants of cvs.…”

“…Pea cultivars have been identified which vary from a high frequency of seed transmission to zero (Stevenson & Hagedorn, 1969, 1973Wang et al, 1992b) and there is a substantial understanding of the molecular and physiological aspects of pea embryology (Casey, 1990). The complete sequence of PSbMV has been published (Johansen et al, 1991).…”
