Hannu T. Verkasaloworks as a research scientist at Helsinki University of Technology, Finland. Verkasalo has published several conference and journal papers on the evolution of mobile service market, and currently he is pursuing a doctoral dissertation on the emergence of the mobile internet. Verkasalo has particularly focused on empirical mobile service research utilising the recently developed handset-based research method. In addition to research work, Hannu Verkasalo gives lectures on network economics, operator business and telecommunication regulation. Verkasalo has also closely collaborated with Nokia in mobile end-user research. Verkasalo holds a Lic.Sc. A newly developed handset-based mobile service research platform was utilised with automatic data mining procedures. The approach provided a scalable and novel market research approach. A typical Finnish panelist spends a daily average of 33 min with a smartphone. Most of this time is allocated on voice calls (33 per cent) and messaging (24 per cent), the overall communication usage representing 60 per cent of all usage time. Younger people and men are still the most active users of smartphones. The Finnish market has developed particularly in the use of packet data and person-toperson services. Handset bundling has indirectly driven usage because more data, voice and SMS packet plans are available. Handset bundling is also refl ected in the increased use of operatorspecifi c clients. ABPU (average billing per user) levels correlate with data, voice and SMS service usage, whereas no clear correlation between ABPU and (free) offl ine service usage exists. People still consider the pricing and technical implementation of the mobile WWW and email as bottlenecks for wider mobile internet usage. WLAN traffi c already represents a signifi cant share of aggregated traffi c volume, although the number of WLAN-capable phones in the panel is small. Mobile data volume is evolving gradually towards multimedia and infotainment from mere static content and communication. Three distinctive end-user segments were identifi ed when demonstrating usage-based clustering of users. The handset-based research approach has many advantages to alternative market research tools.

A Chinese version of the Attitudes Toward Research scale was originally developed by Hui and Li (2005) in measuring the attitudes which Hong Kong curriculum leaders have toward action research. Apart from identifying the dimension of perceived ability for doing research (AB), the scale was meticulous in distinguishing between the two senses of the significance of research: a communal sense of the significance of research as a means for professional development (CS) and a pedagogical sense of the significance of research as a means to provide solutions for teaching and learning deficiencies (PS). With the assumption that an understanding of these attitudes helps to assess the development of curriculum reform in Hong Kong, the present study therefore aims to validate the scale with the original 2003/04 cohort of 209 curriculum leaders and a new 2008/09 cohort of 126 curriculum leaders. Following multidimensional scaling, structured scale reduction procedures and structural equation modeling, a 10-item 3-factor curriculum leaders' attitudes toward research (CL-ATR) model was resulted. The work reported here contributes to gaining an understanding of how to nurture research attitudes for curriculum development and school improvement.Keywords: attitudes toward action research/ curriculum leadership /curriculum development and school improvement

RESUMOHomens e mulheres apresentam discrepâncias salariais, de condições e oportunidades de trabalho. Embora as mulheres estejam inseridas em 40 % das posições de trabalho do mundo ocidental, a minoria delas encontrase em posições de liderança nos setores de gestão e na política. As mulheres são em maior número dentre os com maior escolaridade, em relação aos homens, e têm remuneração inferior às recebidas pelo universo masculino. Para fazer a mesma atividade, homens e mulheres recebem pagamentos diferentes. Neste artigo apresentamos os resultados de uma pesquisa sobre a atuação do profissional Técnico em Química, realizada por meio da aplicação de três questionários: um primeiro questionário voltado aos gestores dos setores de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento da indústria química, um segundo questionário destinado aos Técnicos em Química atuantes nos setores de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento destas empresas e por fim, um questionário aplicado aos alunos de um curso Técnico em Química. O número de alunas matriculadas nesse curso Técnico de Química é 2,7 vezes maior do que o número de alunos. O número de Técnicas em Química respondentes da pesquisa nas empresas avaliadas é 1,77 vezes maior do que o número de Técnicos em Química. O número de homens no papel de líder é 2,03 vezes maior do que o número de mulheres nesta função. Em uma amostra de gestores de laboratório com formação em Química em nível superior, doze dos 21 gestores fizeram também o curso Técnico em Química. Estes dados mostram que embora as mulheres estejam em maior número no Curso Técnico em Química e atuando como Técnicas em Química nas instituições, poucas chegam aos cargos de liderança.Palavras-chave: gênero; trabalho; liderança; técnico em química. ABSTRACTMen and women have gap in payment, in job conditions and opportunities. In spite of being inserted in 40% of working positions in the occident, women in leadership positions are the minority in the areas of management and politics. Women are more numerous among those with higher level of education, compared to men, and receive lower payments compared with the male universe. To do the same activity, men and women receive different payments. This article presents the results of the application of three surveys: a first one applied to managers in planning and development departments of chemical industry, a second survey for Chemistry Technicians that work in planning and development departments of these companies, and, lastly, a survey applied to students of a Technical Chemistry course. The number of female students registered in this specific Chemical Technician course is 2.7 times greater than the number of male students. The number of female Chemistry Technicians survey respondents evaluated in companies is 1.77 times larger than the number of male Chemistry Technicians. The number of men with a Chemistry degree in the leading role of a chemistry lab is 1, 2 UFRGS -Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre/RS -Brasil.
