The Survey for Ionization in Neutral Gas Galaxies. I. Description and Initial Results

Abstract: We introduce the Survey for Ionization in Neutral Gas Galaxies (SINGG), a census of star formation in H iselected galaxies. The survey consists of H and R-band imaging of a sample of 468 galaxies selected from the H i Parkes All Sky Survey ( HIPASS). The sample spans three decades in H i mass and is free of many of the biases that affect other star-forming galaxy samples. We present the criteria for sample selection, list the entire sample, discuss our observational techniques, and describe the data reduction … Show more

“…Recently, Meurer et al (2009) have examined correlations in the Hα-to-FUV flux ratio with the Hα and R-band surface brightnesses, using the H i-selected samples of the Survey of Ionization in Neutral Gas Galaxies (SINGG; Meurer et al 2006) and the Survey of UV emission in Neutral Gas Galaxies (SUNGG). Meurer et al find that the Hα-to-FUV flux ratio decreases with decreasing surface brightness.…”

“…To facilitate a direct comparison, we utilize R-band imaging from either SDSS or LVL, and follow the surface brightness measurement procedure described in Meurer et al (2006). Below, we briefly summarize the methodology.…”

“…There are several active star forming regions. The H-band image is from the VISTA Phase III survey 4 and the Hα + R-band is from the SINGG survey (Meurer et al 2006). Table 2 summarizes information available on J1609-04.…”
