The 12C/13C Ratio in Sgr B2(N): Constraints for Galactic Chemical Evolution and Isotopic Chemistry

Abstract: A study has been conducted of 12 C/ 13 C ratios in five complex molecules in the Galactic center. H 2 CS, CH 3 CCH, NH 2 CHO, CH 2 CHCN, and CH 3 CH 2 CN and their 13 C-substituted species have been observed in numerous transitions at 1, 2, and 3 mm, acquired in a spectral-line survey of Sgr B2(N), conducted with the telescopes of the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO). Between 22 and 54 individual, unblended lines for the 12 C species and 2-54 for 13 C-substituted analogs were modeled in a global radiative trans… Show more

“…The average HCN/H 13 CN, 86±4, is significantly higher than the 12 C/ 13 C ratio of 65 ± 10 in the local ISM (Halfen et al 2017), but agrees surprisingly well with the value of 89±1 in the PSN (Clayton & Nittler 2004). This indicates that HCN is slightly depleted in 13 C in TW Hya, opposite to what was found in the L1498 pre-stellar core (Magalhães et al 2018), suggesting that the underlying process may not be the same in these two environments.…”

“…The non-detection of vinyl alcohol with ALMA along with its non-detection with the IRAM 30 m telescope (Belloche et al 2013) confirms that if vinyl alcohol were present in the Sgr B2(N) star forming region at the level reported by Turner & Apponi (2001), whose observations with the Kitt Peak 12 m telescope did not resolve the multiple hot cores embedded in Sgr B2(N), then its emission must arise from the source envelope on large scales (> 1 pc) and not from the much more compact hot cores, as already stated by Belloche et al (2013). Surveys like PRIMOS (Prebiotic Interstellar Molecular Survey, Neill et al (2012)) or the one performed at the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO) (Halfen et al 2017) may shed more light on the presence and distribution of vinyl alcohol toward Sgr B2(N).…”

“…The assignment was in part based on the 12 C 13 C isotopic ratio of 22 determined by Gardner & Whiteoak (1982) which is consistent with the Galactic centre value and not with the higher ratio that characterises local clouds. Indeed, the 12 C 13 C isotopic ratio shows a gradient with galactocentric distance, increasing from about 20 in the GC to about 60-70 for local gas (Milam et al 2005;Halfen et al 2017). As a further verification, we used the EMoCA data to measure the 12 C 13 C isotopic ratio of the velocity components at −2.6, 3.7, and 8 km s −1 (covering the velocity range from −5 to 10 km s −1 ).…”
