“…Francis (1977) traced Captain King's Shellbed from Kawhia to the Awakino valley, and Hudson (1983a) mapped the Temaikan rocks. Mapping by Waterhouse & White (1994) at Kawhia, Meesook & Grant-Mackie (1995) in the Kinohaku-Te Anga area, and Hasibuan (1980Hasibuan ( , 1982 in the Whareorino area allows more detailed correlation than was Challinor (1979aChallinor ( , b, 1996, GrantMackie (1981), Fleming (1987), Crampton (1988), MacFarlan (1992, Damborenea & Mancefiido (1992), and Campbell & Grant-Mackie (1995).…”

“…Forward movement of maximum diameters occurs in other Belemnopsis and in Duvalia (Challinor 1991), in Hibolithes (Challinor 1999), and probably occurs in most taxa where maximum diameter is anteriorly placed in the adult. A general increase in robustness and decrease in hastation is common (references above), and a small increase in the amount of cross-section flattening with growth occurs widely (Challinor 1979a(Challinor , 1991(Challinor , 1996. A relatively more strongly developed ventral groove in adults occurs in some Hibolithes (Challinor 1999).…”

“…To be consistent with my previous papers, the older terms continue to be used here. Techniques and descriptive terms broadly follow Stevens (1965), but graphical and statistical descriptive methods developed in a series of papers (Challinor 1975(Challinor , 1979a(Challinor , b, 1999Challinor & Skwarko 1982) allow a more comprehensive approach.…”

“…Earlier studies have been well summarised by Fleming & Kear (1960), who provided a detailed lithostratigraphic and biostratigraphic framework for Middle and Upper Jurassic strata along the southern shore of Kawhia Harbour. Subsequent studies have provided stratigraphic refinements, added paleontologic evidence to this framework, and sought to apply the scheme to areas to the south (e.g., Stevens 1965;Challinor 1968Challinor , 1977Challinor , 1979Challinor , 1980MacFarlan 1975MacFarlan , 1992Francis 1977;Hudson 1983;Hudson et al 1988;). Extension of Fleming & Kear's scheme southwards has been attempted without a good understanding of lithologic and thickness variations in intervening areas and so has been unsatisfactory.…”
