The Success of A.I.D. and Semen Characteristics: Study on 1489 Cycles and 192 Ejaculates

Abstract: A comparison was made between successful (167) and unsuccessful (1322) insemination cycles in order to evaluate the role in conception of different semen characteristics. The most important semen variable was found to be post-thaw motility: the success rate per cycle increased from 7% when post-thaw motility was less than or equal to 40% to 17% when it was greater than or equal to 65%. Multiple inseminations in a cycle increased the success rate primarily when semen quality was poor. The results of this study … Show more

“…Table I shows that the pregnancy rate is also correlated to the parameters indi cated. These observations are in agreement with those obtained by David et al [1980] and Trounson et al [1980]. In these publica tions the results are based on motility ex pressed in percent; however, with a constant volume of semen used, the results are com parative to ours.…”

“…Not only eco nomic aspects but also the possibility of the most effective medical treatment could so be considered. David et al [1980] and Trounson et al [1980] published investigations of the possi ble relations between semen qualities and fre quency of pregnancies. It was shown that the concentration of spermatozoa in the ejacu lates and the percentage of motile spermato zoa after thawing influenced the pregnancy rate.…”

“…Several publications on AID have reported that despite selection of donors on the basis of superior semen quality, pregnancy rates vary widely among donors [10][11][12]. In the present study, the association between suboptimal semen quality and donor fecundability was studied in 128 female recipients un- dergoing AID cycles.…”

“…Trounson et al [1980] obtained pregnancies using semen with 18.3 ± 9.41 • 106 MST, and David et al [1980] established a limit of 12.5-106 MST, using semen from donors of known fertility. In our material the lowest concentration was 15-106 MST.…”
