“…In the sibling intragenerational bargain, LFGC students are motivated to succeed academically as a means of contributing to the family's intragenerational mobility and to repay sibling familial sacrifices and/or sibling educational support. The sibling intragenerational bargain extends prior literature (e.g., Ceja 2006;Flores 2018Flores , 2021Pérez and McDonough 2008) by ( 1) examining how sibling dynamics (e.g., birth order and differences in sibling attainment) shape negotiations of educational support and by (2) centering reciprocity processes to include the contributions of older and younger siblings beyond the college choice process. “…In examining the peculiar and liminal life that faḍl occupies amidst the failure or absence of other forms of exchange and relation, the expectations faḍl (dis)organizes produce valuable citizenship claims from the vantage point of the Iraqi exilic experience. These aspirations and claims could be to extract recognition and rights from the state (Isin, 2004; Lazar & Nuijten, 2013; Paz, 2018) but could also be achieved through appeals to emergent, valuable sites or practices outside of the state (Flores, 2021; Lazar, 2013), while still employing its repertoires and logics. Regardless of the site of these claims, they show how both exile and faḍl , located at the margins of statecraft and exchange relations (Das & Poole, 2004), are entangled in a myriad of co‐constitutive ways in articulating valuable claims toward citizenship that render livelihood in exile sustainable and manageable.…”

“…Smith 2006). Moreover, these youth will often position their educational success as dependent, and shared with, their families and social networks (Flores 2021). In this way, educational success is invested with not only a feeling of deep familial and collective commitment, but serves as proof of migration's collective value to one's loved ones.…”
