Cicindis Bruch is a monospecific genus of carabid beetles endemic to Argentina. In this contribution, Cicindis horni Bruch is re-described, with addition of new morphological features of male internal sac, female genital tract and elytral closure. New information on the species' habitat and distribution is also provided. The phylogenetic placement and relationships of Cicindis within the family Carabidae are discussed on the basis of a cladistic analysis. Terminal taxa included representatives of all subfamilies of Carabidae and supertribes of Carabinae, with a major sampling of those taxa considered to be closely related to Cicindini by previous authors. The phylogenetic analysis shows the basal position of Cicindis in a clade that includes Ozaeninae, Omophronini, Scaritinae and Conjuncta. A close relationship of Cicindis with Ozaenini + Metriini is supported by the particular closure of the procoxa and the ventral position of the oviduct with respect to the spermatheca.

IntroduccIón carabidae (Insecta: coleoptera), conjuntamente con las familias Haliplidae, Hygrobidae, Amphizoidae, Gyrinidae, noteridae y dytiscidae, constituyen el suborden Adephaga. Se conocen aproximadamente 33.000 especies de carábidos en el mundo (Martínez, 2005), 4.585 de ellas en América del Sur, distribuidas en siete subfamilias, 51 tribus y 336 géneros (reichardt, 1979;roig-Juñent & domínguez, 2001). A esto debemos sumar los nuevos taxones descritos desde 2001, que para América del Sur austral suman unas 50 especies y tres géneros.El aumento del conocimiento de la biodiversidad depende de las investigaciones que se realicen. Sin embargo, estas investigaciones están en muchos casos supeditadas a limitantes de índole política o económica que marcan hechos históri-cos. Los avances en el conocimiento de la fauna de América del Sur, incluyendo la descripción de nuevas especies y la ampliación del área de distribución, han estado influidos por muchos de estos acontecimientos históricos. Las guerras mundiales, intereses económicos de Europa en otras partes del mundo, o la apertura de los canales de Suez y Panamá influyeron en el conocimiento de las especies de América del Sur (Ball, 1996; roigJuñent, 1998).En esta contribución presentamos cómo se ha desarrollado el conocimiento de la entomofauna del cono sur de América del Sur, tomando como ejemplo la familia carabidae, desde el primer momento en que se describe una especie de esta región en 1775 hasta la actualidad. the present contribution present a synopsis to scientific knowledge during all this time, including scientific studies of the carabid fauna of southern South America through 237 years of systematic work. the tendencies that seem to have influenced the description rates during this time are also indicated. Political, economic and historical events are analysed considering their influence on the amount of described taxa.Key words: History, Systematics, coleoptera, carabidae, South America.Resumen: Las carabidae son una de las familias más ricas en especies de coleoptera. Se conocen 40 tribus para América austral (76,4 % de la fauna neotropical). La riqueza de tribus es característica de las zonas de transición, en este caso, entre las regiones neotropical y Andina. El número de especies presentes en América del Sur austral representa el 23 % de las especies neotropicales, con muchos endemismos y tribus relictuales, principalmente de origen pangeico o gondwánico. Muchos años de trabajo se necesitaron para alcanzar este conocimiento sobre los carábidos del sur de América del Sur. Este trabajo es una sinopsis de la labor científica durante todo este tiempo, donde se incluyen los estudios científicos de la fauna de carábidos del sur de América del Sur a través de 237 años de trabajo sistemático. Asimismo se indican las tendencias que parecen haber influido sobre las tasas de descripción durante este tiempo. Los acontecimientos políticos, económicos e históricos son analizados considerando su influencia sobre la cantidad de taxones descritos.

Western Australian populations of Mecyclothorax punctipennis (MacLeay) exhibit chiral polymorphism for male genitalic asymmetry. The plesiomorphic genitalic enantiomorph, wherein the male aedeagal median lobe is left side superior when retracted in the abdomen, is rotated 180° to a right side superior position in 23% of males from Western Australia. Conversely, population samples from eastern Australia are monomorphic for the plesiomorphic left side superior condition. Western Australian population samples are significantly heterogeneous for the percentages of chirally reversed males, with right side superior frequencies ranging 0-58%. Conversely, asymmetry of the M. punctipennis female reproductive tract, wherein the apex of the bursa copulatrix is distally expanded toward the right side of the individual, is shown to be monomorphic within the species. Based on the vast disparity in frequencies of left versus right enantiomorphs among populations of Western Australian M. punctipennis, we hypothesize that population demographic factors related to very small population size and differential gene sampling via genetic drift could interact to establish populations fixed for the novel form. When such chiral genitalic substitutions are coupled with speciation, subsequent diversification stemming from that common ancestor would result in monophyletic lineages characterized by genitalic inversion. This hypothesis is corroborated by the sporadic occurrences of individual males with chirally inverted genitalia throughout the Carabidae, and the known occurrence of eight carabid taxa -individual species to diverse lineages -that are monomorphically characterized by male genitalic inversion.
