The Study on Feasibility and Welding Characteristics of GMAW Surfacing Remanufacturing of H13 Steel Cutter Ring of TBM Hob

Abstract: As H13 steel is a common material for cutters of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), the research on surfacing remanufacturing performance is of great value. In this paper, the phase composition of the surfacing layer of H13 steel after gas metal arc welding (GMAW) was analyzed by exploring the precipitation of hard phase in the molten pool, and the microstructure evolution of the surfacing layer was revealed. Then, we carried out simulation modeling analysis on H13 steel surfacing remanufacturing. Results show that:… Show more

“…For that reason, the rebuilding of forging dies is often considered and welding is the most popular technology in such cases. Countless welding processes are used for that purpose, while the majority of repair welding is done by gas metal arc welding (GMAW) [13,14] or gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) [15,16]. The surfacing processes using high energy density welding processes are being considered recently as well, like plasma transfer arc (PTA) [17,18] or laser cladding (LS) [19,20].…”

“…Remanufacturing technology has been widely used in the automotive, aviation, and marine fields and has achieved good economic benefits [ 8 , 9 , 10 ]. In order to avoid direct scrapping of failed cutter rings and to reduce carbon emissions, He et al [ 11 ] proposed a remanufacturing scheme for failed cutter rings of TBM disc cutters with uniform wear (hereinafter referred to as normally-worn rings) based on gas metal arc welding technology (GMAW). Initially, they verified the feasibility of remanufacturing repair of cutter rings that are made of AISI H13 hot work tool steel (hereinafter referred to as H13 steel).…”

“…Previously, many surface modification techniques [5][6][7][8] have also been used to repair other materials and thus improve their service life. Examples include surface remanufacturing [9], thermal spraying [10], electroplating [11], and vapor deposition [12]. These techniques enhance the surface properties of the substrate without changing the overall properties of the substrate material.…”
