The study of stability, combustion characteristics and performance of water in diesel emulsion fuel

Abstract: Abstract.A single cylinder diesel engine study of water in diesel emulsions was conducted to investigate the stability effect of emulsion fuel on three different fuel blends and the water emulsification effect on the engine performance. Emulsified fuels contained 2% of surfactant including Span 80 Tween 80 and tested 10 HLB number. The blends also varied of 5%, 10% and 15% of water in diesel ratios namely as BSW5, BSW10 and BSW15. The fuel blends performance was tested using a single cylinder, direct injection… Show more

“…Currently, fatty acid esters, alcohol ethoxylates, sorbitan monooleate, tween 20, tween 80, span 80, Gemini, fatty acid ethoxylates, etc. are popular surfactants used in stabilizing diesel emulsion [67,68]. Those surfactants exhibit HLB values that range from 9 to 10 and their amount in the blend is between 0.5% and 5% by volume [35] while the water content is between 5% and 15% w / w [69].…”

“…where: ρ1, ρ2 is the fuel density at temperatures t1 and t2 (ρ =γ/9,81 kgf 2 /M 4 ); α(ρ) is the coefficient of volumetric expansion of the fuel when heated. The dependence of the fuel viscosity on the temperature v(t) can also be represented by an analytical dependence based on empirical data [8][9][10][11].…”

“…Additives can be incorporated to improve performance. Sorbitan monooleate, fatty acid esters, Span 80, Tween 20, and Tween 80 are surfactants that are commonly used for the stabilization of diesel emulsions [107,108] and have HLB values of 9-10. The quantity of these surfactants ranges from 0.5 to 5% by volume, whereas the water content is from 5 to 15% p/p [109].…”
