“…Our findings are much closer to those of Bhatnagar et al (1980) than to those of Gopalan (1972). A slight difference in the interpretation of metacentric and submetacentric chromosomes exists which may be due to technical variations, because Bhatnagar et al (1980) used the squash method.…”

“…Recently Dacus cucurbitae, a serious pest of more than eighty types ot" fruits and vegetables has been analysed cytogenetically in lndia (Srivastava & Kaul, 1961;Gopalan, 1972;Gopalan & Dass, 5972;Bhatnagar et al, 1980). Unfortunately the outcome of these studies has been the point of controversy.…”

“…However, in karyological studies of Anastrepha (Basso et al 2003) and other genera of fruit flies [e.g. Dacus cucurbitae Coquillet (Gopalan 1972), Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Zacharopoulou 1986), Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh) (Procunier & Smith 1993), Bactrocera oleae Gmelin (Canovai et al 1996 )], the autosomes are numbered in a descending order, the largest being number 2 (or II). The latter system will be used in the present report.…”

“…Comparision with Rhagoletis cerasi and Xyphosia miliaris showed the usual type of polytenes, there being no emphasis of the kinetochore region by heterochromatin. The same holds for the Trypetid Dacus cucurbitae (GOPALAN 1972). In the Tephritid Procecidochares utilis (BusH et al 1969) the polytene chromosomes do contain distended and barrel-shaped swellings in the region of the kinetochore, similarly the polytenes in certain stages of the nurse cells in Calliphora erythrocephala (BIER 1960 ), but these consist only of granular heterochromatin and show no diffuse or compact bands as in Urophora.…”
