T. Borikun
et al.

Abstract: Background. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide. Disco- vering novel prognostic markers for OSCC can improve treatment outcomes by allowing for more effective therapy strategies. Aim. To identify the prognostic value of CDKN2A (p16INK4a) and miRNAs involved in its regulation as markers of OSCC. Materials and Methods. The work is based on the results of the examination and treatment of 70 patients with stage II—IV OSCC. miR-10b, -155, and CDKN2A mRNA expressio… Show more

“…Hypermethylation of the CDKN2A promoter region is associated with gene silencing. Epigenetic alterations in CDKN2A may contribute to its reduced expression in OSCC, allowing for uncontrolled cell proliferation [45]. Homozygous deletion of the CDKN2A locus is a common mechanism leading to the loss of both p16INK4a and p14ARF functions in OSCC.…”

“…The spotlight in cancer research has swung towards miRNAs. These short, non-coding RNA molecules are capable of fine-tuning gene expression and play a role in oncogenesis; also they have potential as prognostic markers in cancer patients [3,4]. In varying ways, miRNAs can affect the processes of cancer invasion and metastases.…”
