“…Several genes included in the Th17-differentiation family were also overexpressed in VKC. Increased serum and tears levels of IL-17 have been reported in VKC [25,26]. Considering also that we previously found Th17-cells in VKC tears (unpublished data) our hypothesis is that a subpopulation of VKC patients may be driven by a Th17-response or that Th2 and Th17 inflammatory pathways are mutually regulated in VKC as suggested in asthmatic patients [27].…”

“…We studied the production of IL-17 in a limited number of VKC children and found that serum level of IL-17 was significantly higher respect to the healthy controls although it did not correlate with clinical grading of severity [37]. A subsequent study confirmed our results in larger VKC population and showed, unlike our results, that the levels of IL-17 correlated with the severity, in particular with the presence and size of Trantas dots [38].…”

“…The role of Th17 in ocular allergy is controversial. Some researches reported preliminary data suggesting increased tear levels of IL-17 in VKC [29] and in SAC and PAC [30]. However this does not directly point to a role for Th17 cells as other cells, innate immune cells, are also IL-17…”
