“…A notable concern, critics remark, is the profound, yet often subtle, ways in which nostalgia and tradition are operationalised as political devices to venerate dominant narratives while subsequently sanitising or suppressing alternate renderings. Importantly, research continues to explore how the deleterious and amorphous effects of tradition in sport are played out (useful work in this regard has been examinations of decolonisation (Bang & Amara, 2014;Borell & Kahi, 2017;Hokowhitu, 2009); political protest (Maclean, 2010;; and critical heritage/museology (Phillips, Osmond & Morgan, 2013;Ramshaw & Gammon, 2017)). A recognition of tradition is of value in this paper in appreciating how nostalgia is nuanced and enacted in specific sport contexts.…”

“…Of course, there is other work in English in the form of articles in peer-reviewed journals and chapters in edited volumes, and these publications also offer social and political analyses of soccer in the northeast Asian nation. However, these articles tend to focus on specific topics in Korean football such as fan culture, national identity, and the 2002 FIFA World Cups (Bang & Amara, 2014;Oh, 2013;Whang, 2006). This means that, while one should acknowledge the valuable academic contribution that these research papers have made thus far, it is difficult to grasp a broad narrative of football development in Korea by relying on these essays alone.…”
