The structures of (Sr,Ba)[(Al,Ga)2(Si,Ge)2O8]. III. The crystal structures of the paracelsian-like modifications of synthetic SrGa2Ge2O8 and BaGa2Ge2O8

Abstract: The structures of the title modifications of synthetic SrGa2Ge208 and BaGa2Ge208 have been determined from counter intensities and refined by Fourier and full-matrix least-squares methods. Both compounds crystallize in space group P21/a with Z=4. The mean tetrahedral distances for SrGa2Ge208 are:(Ge-O)= 1.748 (2), (Ga-O)= 1.829 (2) and for BaGa2Ge208: (Ge-O)= 1.753 (4), (Ga-O)= 1.820 (4) /~. The two structures may be considered very highly, or completely, ordered. A comparison of the present results with those… Show more

“…It is interesting to note ( Table 5) that for BaGa2Ge2Os they are both significantly narrower than 131 ° which seems to be the value preferred by the natural feldspars (Megaw, 1974b). From the results obtained for the stability conditions of the fe]dspar and paracelsian forms (Gazzoni, 1973;Calleri & Gazzoni, 1975b), we may infer that a narrower (T-O-T) corresponds to a smaller stability field of the feldspar form. The individual T-O bonds also show significant scatterings from the mean values, both for BaGa2Ge2Os (Table 3a) (Table 4a; Calleri & Gazzoni, 1976). …”

“…On the other hand, given the M-cation type, an increase in the average T-cation size corresponds to an increase of the distortion: the aluminosilicates show the smallest and the gallogermanates the largest distortions both among the feldspars and the paracelsians. Experimentally, we * In previous papers (Calleri & Gazzoni, 1974, 1976a we used, for the T sites in the paracelsian framework, a notation different from that of Phillips, Kroll, Pentinghaus & Ribbe (1975). We labelled T(I)(m) and T(2)(0) the paracelsian sites allocating the trivalent T cations as for the feldspars.…”
