The structure of tricarbonyl(styrene)chromium, a crystal active in second-harmonic generation

Abstract: Abstract.[Cr(CO)a(C6HsCH=CH2)], Mr= 240.178, orthorhombic, P21212 ~, a = 11-5456 (6), b = 12.3227(9), c=7.3741 (5)A, V-1049.14(12)A a, at 291K. 2(MoKch)=0.70930A; Z=4, D x= 1.520 gcm -3,/z = 10.44 cm -~, F(000) = 488. The absolute structure was determined. R(F)=0.029 for 1306 data having IFI2>o(IFI2); g~=1.31. The styrene ligand is disordered, with two orientations

“…We ascertained the structural details of complexes 2aa and 3aa by X-ray crystallographic analyses (Figure ). The Cr–C bond lengths in both complexes did not change from those in complex 1a itself, and neither the oxygen nor nitrogen atom coordinated to the Cr atom. When complex 2aa was exposed to sunlight in the air for a day, complete demetalation occurred, and ethyl 2-phenylethyl ether was quantitatively obtained.…”
