The structure of the lung of the newborn marsupial bandicoot,Isoodon macrounus

Abstract: In bandicoots, implantation takes place 9.5 days after mating and birth occurs 3 days later. It is therefore of interest to examine the lungs of newborn marsupials to ascertain the stage of lung development with respect to other organs and other mammals in view of the short period of time allowed for maturation of lung tissue. The newborn bandicoot lung is composed of a primitive system of branching airways which terminate in large blind sacs; alveolar ducts or alveoli are not present. The terminating sacs, wh… Show more

“…A few studies have described the histological appearance of metatherian lungs (Gemmel, 1986; Gemmell & Little, 1982; Gemmell & Selwood, 1994) but no studies have mentioned BALT until recently (Old et al. 2003a; Young et al.…”

“…Corticosteroids increase towards term in the fetal plasma of ruminants, small animal species, the pig, and primates (Liggins et al, 1973;Mulay et al, 1973;Challis et al, 1977;Lohse and First, 1981); and this has been shown to be the result of increased secretion from the fetal adrenals in sheep (Liggins et al, 19731, guinea pigs (Jones and Roebuck, 19801, and the pig (Lohse and First, 1981). In the marsupial I. macrourus, a concentration of 0.1 ng per adrenal is observed in the newborn bandicoot (Gemmell et al, 1982). This contrasts with the concentration of 0.58 ng per adrenal in the larger newborn of M. rufogriseus.…”

“…Profiles of smooth endoplasmic reticulum indicative of steroid biosynthesis are abundant in the fetal adrenal cells of eutherian mammals (Malamed, 1975), and in such marsupials as the bandicoot Isoodon macrourus (Gemmell et al, 1982). In the tammar, adrenocortical cells have the enzymatic capacity for steroid synthesis five days prior to birth, and this functional capability is established only one day after formation of the gland (Call et al, 1980).…”

“…This was described as having a small intestine lined with tall columnar epithelial cells with centrally located nuclei. Gemmell and Little (1982) and Gemmell (1986) described the developing lungs of the newborn Northern brown bandicoot (Isoodon macrourus) as having air sacs but no alveoli. The newborn lungs of the stripe-faced dunnart (Sminthopsis macroura) were similarly described (Gemmell and Selwood 1994).…”
