In this article, an interpretation of Marx’s notions of abstraction and concretization is presented. Unlike Leszek Nowak’s approach, Marx’s use of idealizations is not a reversible process of adding and removing idealizing assumptions. Marx had a richer use of the term abstraction, one in which concretization involves a creative moment of conceptual innovation. Marx adds new variables and new assumptions and elaborates new categories at different levels of abstraction in order to show the unity between appearances and essences. De-idealization, according to Marx, involves both recomposition and de-isolation. Also, concretization, for Marx, does not follow a linear approximation to reality, but rather a hermeneutical circle that is constantly in the process of reframing categories to provide answers to different questions. As a case study, this article shows an interpretation of Marx’s labor theory of value.

Düşünce deneylerinin kullanımı antik dönemlere götürülebilir. Düşünce deneyleri bilimler ve felsefe için önemli yöntemlerden birisidir. Literatürde her ne kadar düşünce deneylerinin belirli başlı özellikleri üzerinde bir düzeyde uzlaşı bulunuyor görünse de halen hangi zihinsel operasyonların düşünce deneyleri olarak değerlendirileceği ile ilgili bir görüş birliği yoktur. Düşünce deneyleri doğa bilimlerinde ve sosyal bilimlerde yaygın biçimde kullanılan epistemik bir araçtır. Her ne kadar doğa bilimleri sosyal bilimlere göre düşünce deneylerine daha sık başvursa da bu yöntem doğa bilimleri ile sınırlandırılmamıştır. Tarih, ekonomi gibi sosyal bilimler de zaman zaman çeşitli amaçlarla düşünce deneylerine başvururlar. Ekonomi sosyal bir bilimdir ve teorik ekonomideki çoğu yayın düşünce deneyleri içermektedir. Hatta ilk bakışta güncel ekonomi büyük bir düşünce deneyi gibi görünebilir. Öte yandan ekonomi modeller ile ilerler. Bu bağlamda bu makalede düşünce deneylerini ekonomi bağlamında değerlendirilecektir. Buna ek olarak her ne kadar bazı sınır durumları olabilse de ekonomideki tüm düşünce deneylerini modeller olarak değerlendirmenin oldukça güç olduğu iddia edilecektir.

Gradual de-idealisation and progress in political science: a case study

This article contributes to the discussion regarding the relationship between idealisation, de-idealisation and cognitive scientific progress. In this, I raise the question of the significance of the gradual de-idealisation procedure for constructing political science theories. I show that conceptions that assume the reversibility of the idealisation process can be an extremely useful theoretical perspective in reconstructions of political science modelling and analyses of scientific progress in political science. I base my position on the results of the methodological reconstruction of Richard Jankowski’s theory of voting. My reconstruction and results of empirical studies show that by gradually removing simplifying assumptions, models can emerge that more accurately identify the determinants of the voting decision and the corresponding relationships. In the case I analysed, the transition from coarse-grained to fine-grained models likely demarcates the line of scientific progress.
