The structure of behavioral variation within a genotype

Abstract: Individual animals vary in their behaviors. This is true even when they share the same genotype and were reared in the same environment. Clusters of covarying behaviors constitute behavioral syndromes, and an individual's position along such axes of covariation is a representation of their personality. Despite these conceptual frameworks, the structure of behavioral covariation within a genotype is essentially uncharacterized and its mechanistic origins unknown. Passing hundreds of isogenic Drosophila individu… Show more

“…Individual measures of fly behavior (Ayroles et al, 2015;Bierbach et al, 2017;Buchanan et al, 2015;Freund et al, 2013;Kain et al, 2012;Linneweber et al, 2019;Schuett et al, 2011;Todd et al, 2017;Werkhoven et al, 2019a) are typically stable over days. This was indeed the case for the specific turn biases that flies showed in the dark and light conditions, as well as their individual LDM values (Fig 1I).…”

“…We developed computational tools that allow the behavioral monitoring of mosquitoes at an unprecedented level of detail. Behavioral research on other animals, including fruit flies (Werkhoven et al, 2019;Pereira et al, 2019) and zebrafish (Marques et al, 2018;Johnson et al, 2020) shows that high spatiotemporal resolution data describing the posture of animals can be very informative to dissect behavioral trajectories and compare behavioral statistics across individuals and experimental treatments. While the details of computational approaches differ, a common theme is the two dimensional embedding of a high-dimensional representation of an animal at a given time point (e.g.…”

“…For odor-glomeruli combinations with missing DoOR values (40% of the dataset), we performed imputation via alternating least squares (using the pca function with option 'als' to infill missing values 69 ) on the odor x glomerulus matrix 1000 times and taking the mean infilled matrix, which provides a closer match to ground truth missing values than a single run of ALS (Figure S4 of 70 ).…”
