The stromal composition of mast cell aggregates in systemic mastocytosis

Abstract: Systemic mastocytosis is a stem cell disorder characterized histologically by the presence of multifocal compact aggregates of mast cells in at least one extracutaneous organ with or without evidence of skin lesions. The mast cell aggregates are accompanied by fibrosis, which is often significant. However, in spite of its frequent occurrence and severity, little is known about its characteristics. In this study, we evaluated the composition of the fibrotic mast cell aggregates by studying eight bone marrow bio… Show more

“…In many different tissues, organs, and in a variety of benign and malignant diseases (48), mast cell aggregates are accompanied by fibrosis (49). However, in spite of its frequent occurrence and severity, little is known about a cause and effect relationship, and this is particularly true in pancreatic cancer.…”

“…Systemic mastocytosis involves the degranulation of mast cells throughout the body (97), and is associated with serious local, and moderate systemic, fibrosis (98, 99). Mast cell degranulation causes the release of tryptase.…”

“…Immunohistochemical stains for low-affinity nerve growth factor receptor were performed to identify the adventitial reticular cells, whereas smooth muscle actin stain identified myofibroblastic differentiation within the bone marrow stromal cells. 14 The positivity was evaluated semi-quantitatively as negative (0), focally positive (1 þ ), positive (2 þ ) or strongly diffusely positive (3 þ ).…”
