The stream fish fauna from the rio Machado basin, Rondônia State, Brazil

Abstract: The rio Machado (also known as Ji-Paraná) is a tributary of the rio Madeira in the Amazon basin. Currently, the rio Madeira contains the greatest fish species richness of the world, with approximately 1,000 species. The present study presents the fish inventory from streams of the rio Machado basin. In total, 75 stream reaches, 80 meter-length, randomly selected, were sampled in 2011 (August to October) and 2012 (June to July). Overall, 22,875 fish in eight orders, 32 families, 89 genera, and 140 species were … Show more

“…Other studies in the Cerrado region (Lemes and Garutti 2002;Verissimo et al 2005;Aquino et al 2009;Machado et al 2011;Casatti et al 2013) obtained the same results regarding the predominance of the orders Characiformes followed by Siluriformes. These authors emphasized that, in streams, the family Characidae stands out for having the greatest number of species, corroborating the results found in the urban streams of Rondonópolis.…”

“…Streamlets in mainland forests are important components of the Amazon fluvial system as they shelter many fish species (Casatti et al 2013), particularly small species with a total length of less than 100 mm (Bührnheim 2002). The family Cichlidae includes approximately 105 genera, with 1,300 species of freshwater and brackish water fish described, and is considered one of the largest families of fish although Kullander (2003) believes the number of species has probably been underestimated.…”

It is also considered one of the most specious and common families in streamlets in the Amazon Forest (Mendonça et al 2008;Casatti et al 2013).…”
