When Tokens MatterTokens, or low levels of minority or female representatives in state legislatures, have been studied with respect to their perceptions of self-efficacy and political attitudes but not with respect to their actual influence on the passage of public policy. This paper uses state-level data from the child support program between the years 1976-84 to measure the influence of women tokens on the policy process. Using ordered probit models, I explore policy adoption under three configurations: (1) a test of the independent impact of tokens, (2) a dynamic test of the differential impact of tokens and nontokens to analyze potential backlash effects and the potential diffusion of policy preferences, and (3) an interactive test on the potential for tokens to form coalitions. My analysis strongly suggests that tokens make a policy difference independently and to a greater extent than when they are on the cusp of becoming nontokens, but I found less support for the idea that tokens successfully form coalitions to achieve specific policy goals.

The failure to maintain or recapitulate the in vivo organization of mechano-electrical transduction channels in vitro may have broad implications for studies of dissociated and cultured sensory neurons.…”

The sense of touch is conferred by the conjoint function of somatosensory neurons and skin cells. These cells meet across a gap filled by a basal lamina, an ancient structure found in all metazoans. Using Caenorhabditis elegans nematodes, we show that mechanosensory complexes essential for touch sensation reside at this interface and contain laminin, nidogen, and the MEC-4 mechano-electrical transduction channel proteins. These proteins fail to coalesce into discrete, stable structures in dissociated neurons and in touch-insensitive mec-1, mec-9 and mec-5 secreted ECM protein mutants. MEC-4, but not laminin or nidogen, is destabilized in animals where somatosensory neurons secrete MEC-1 carrying missense mutations in the C-terminal Kunitz domain. Thus, neuron-epithelial cell interfaces are instrumental in mechanosensory complex assembly and function. Drawing on computational modeling, we propose that these complexes concentrate mechanical stress into discrete foci and they enhance touch sensitivity. Consistent with this idea, loss of nidogen reduces the density of mechanoreceptor complexes, the amplitude of the touch-evoked currents they carry, and touch sensitivity in parallel. These findings imply that somatosensory neurons secrete proteins that actively repurpose the basal lamina to generate special-purpose mechanosensory complexes responsible for vibrotactile sensing.

Currently, $38 billion in child support payments is due custodial parents in the United States. The purpose of this study is to investigate the public policy and theoretical economic implications associated with tax incentive proposals for child support payments. Institutional theory and economic modeling theoretically support this investigation. Overall, the study suggests that a tax incentive associated with child support payments would enhance tax progressivity and reduce income inequality while also enhancing non-custodial parent ability to pay their child support legal mandates. A tax incentive may also enhance child support payer perceptions of procedural and retributive justice.
