The status of tree breeding in South Africa

Abstract: The status of tree breeding in the Republic of South Africa is presented with the emphasis on statistics rather than description of trials and techniques. A complete list of species and provenance trials is presented indicating the search for new breeding material. Figures of phenotypic selections indicate the large number of species actively being worked on. Seed orchards have been established and good seed production is obtained for some of the major commercial species. Finally, a table summarises the number… Show more

“…In addition, S. bovis, S. curassoni and S. mattheei are known to infect a wide variety of animals including cattle, sheep and goats. Though S. mattheei has been detected at high rates of prevalence in humans in one area in South Africa [37], the other two species have never been detected in human as a single pure species. Detection of hybrids of S. haematobium with either one of these species was thought by scientists to be evidence of possible human infection with the two animal (livestock) Schistosoma species.…”

“…School governing bodies, as mentioned earlier, are key to South Africa's ideal of a democratic system of education (Van Wyk, 2004;Basson and Mestry, 2019). However, the literature on school governing in South Africa reflects the complexities of operationalizing this ideal (Basson and Mestry, 2019;Karlsson et al, 2020;Zuze and Juan, 2020).…”

“…Some of the SGBs' flaws, like low literacy rates, weak communication abilities, and low meeting attendance, have been exposed by literature. In a study of teachers and principals at township schools in South Africa, conducted as part of Van Wyk's (2004) research, 47% of respondents claimed that SGB members, particularly parentgovernors, lacked the requisite skills, which made SGBs less successful. Mncube (2009) also emphasized these flaws, stating that parent-governors were unable to fully participate in SGB activities because of skill deficits, the most significant of which was a lack of communication abilities.…”
