The Status of Genetic Resources and Olive Breeding in Tunisia

Abstract: The olive tree, an iconic symbol of the Mediterranean basin, is the object of growing international interest in the production of olive oil for the world food market. In Tunisia, which is the fourth-largest producer of olive oil in the world, the production of olives and olive oil is of great socio-economic importance. Cultivation is widespread from north to south, but it is carried out using traditional techniques that results in extremely irregular production levels. To maintain their competitiveness on the … Show more

“…grown for table olive production. Fruit size is a trait with high heritability [42,43], one of the most important domestication traits [44,45], and a target of modern olive breeding programs [46,47]. It will be interesting to further study the common genetic background of the cluster to identify genetic determinants associated with fruit size [48].…”

“…These oases contribute significantly to biodiversity and soil conservation, as well as carbon sequestration. The deep root systems of almond and olive trees help prevent soil erosion, while diverse cropping systems enhance ecosystem resilience (Ossama et al, 2021;Debbabi et al, 2022). Almond trees (Prunus dulcis) and olive trees (Olea europaea) are commonly found in Mediterranean oases, providing nuts and oil, respectively.…”

“…Tunisia, a country rich in phytogenetic resources, has been able to preserve its agricultural history via its agricultural tradition coupled with a program of prospection, acclimatization, and development of plants. These resources consist of various indigenous elements that are a source of future wealth and whose acknowledgment is a crucial factor in the growth of the olive industry (Debbabi et al, 2022). The olive variety is the most important factor in determining the olive oil taste.…”
