The Statistical Polarization Properties of Coherent Curvature Radiation by Bunches: Application to Fast Radio Burst Repeaters

Abstract: Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are extragalactic radio transients with a millisecond duration and an extremely high brightness temperature. Very recently, some highly circularly polarized bursts were found in a repeater, FRB 20201124A. The significant circular polarization might be produced by coherent curvature radiation by bunches with the line of sight (LOS) deviating from the bunch central trajectories. In this work, we carry out simulations to study the statistical properties of burst polarization within the fr… Show more

“…For a certain frequency w ˆ, the larger the viewing angle γθ, the lower (higher) the linear (circular) polarization degree. Thus, the high circular polarization degree should be attributed to the off-beam observation (Wang et al 2022a;Liu et al 2023;.…”

“…The polarization properties of curvature radiation have been studied within the framework of pulsars (e.g. Gil & Snakowski 1990) and FRBs (Gangadhara 2010;Wang et al 2022d,c;Tong & Wang 2022;Liu et al 2023) by various authors. Consider a bunch with charge 𝑄 = 𝑁 𝑒 |𝑒| and Lorentz factor 𝛾 moving along the local magnetic field with curvature radius 𝜌.…”

“…FRB 20201124A has been observed to show frequency-dependent polarization (Hilmarsson et al 2021;Feng et al 2022;Kumar et al 2022). Significant circular bursts were reported by Xu et al (2022), which are considered to be generated by a specific radiation mechanism (Wang et al 2022b;Liu et al 2023;Qu & Zhang 2023). We then excluded those highly circular polarized bursts from our filtered data set.…”
