The State of the Art in Integrating Machine Learning into Visual Analytics

Abstract: Visual analytics systems combine machine learning or other analytic techniques with interactive data visualization to promote sensemaking and analytical reasoning. It is through such techniques that people can make sense of large, complex data. While progress has been made, the tactful combination of machine learning and data visualization is still under-explored. This state-ofthe-art report presents a summary of the progress that has been made by highlighting and synthesizing select research advances. Further… Show more

“…Since the term Visual Analytics (VA) was coined in 2004 [WT04, TC05], there have been hundreds of software systems reported in the literature for supporting various VA workflows (e.g., [ERT∗17, LGH∗17,CLY17]). As articulated by Thomas and Kielman [TK09] and Robertson et.…”

“…Users interact with interactive systems in distinctive ways and often the successful execution of an analysis session depends on the accurate identification of user intent [1]. Algorithms can be trained on user activity logs to understand the user better and can offer "personalized" analytical recommendations to improve the data analysis process.…”
