The State of the Art

Abstract: As the most common sustained arrhythmia in adults, atrial fibrillation (AF) is an established and growing epidemic. To provide optimal patient care, it is important for clinicians to be aware of AF's epidemiological trends, methods of risk reduction, and the various available treatment modalities. Our understanding of AF's pathophysiology has advanced, and with this new understanding has come advancements in prevention strategies as well as pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatment options. Following Pu… Show more

“…Atrial dilatation is also enhanced by the proliferation of atrial fibroblasts. Both conditions lead to structural and electrical remodeling of the left atrium and explain the development of AF in T2DM (1,13,14). The contribution of oxidative stress might also be determined by additional exposure to exogenous sources of ROS, as well as the reduced capacity of antioxidant defense systems to scavenge these molecules in the elderly since their efficiency is age-dependent (15,16).…”

“…Irrespective of its relationship with T2DM, AF should be appropriately managed. Therapeutic solutions include either rate control or rhythm control options and, in patients with CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score of at least one point, anticoagulation agents should be prescribed to prevent thromboembolism and cardiovascular mortality (1,(17)(18)(19).…”

“…The most well-described modifiable factors that increase risk of AF are congestive heart failure (CHF), hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity, alcohol consumption, and obstructive sleep apnea. 28,29 Risk factor modification may impact the development and severity of AF, as illustrated in Figure 1.…”

“…Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a rapidly growing global health problem mainly due to aging of the human population and adherence to unhealthy lifestyles. AF is associated with significant morbidity and mortality predominately resulting from embolic stroke and heart failure (1,2). In 2010, an estimated 33.5 million people were suffering from AF worldwide with tremendous socioeconomic costs.…”
