The State of Speech in HCI: Trends, Themes and Challenges

Abstract: Speech interfaces are growing in popularity. Through a review of 68 research papers this work maps the trends, themes, findings and methods of empirical research on speech interfaces in HCI. We find that most studies are usability/theory-focused or explore wider system experiences, evaluating Wizard of Oz, prototypes, or developed systems by using self-report questionnaires to measure concepts like usability and user attitudes. A thematic analysis of the research found that speech HCI work focuses on nine key … Show more

“…The themes identified may also act as a starting point to develop a measure to allow researchers and designers to quantify the impact of design choices on the dimensions of humanness. Validated metrics to quantify user perceptions are needed in the field [11]. We plan to use this work as a starting point for developing such a metric.…”

“…Analyses like these may be particularly useful in quickly measuring trust for conversational agents deployed over the web like commercial IPAs and chatbots. Combining subjective, behavioral, and physiological measures of trust not only enrich the mixed methods approach proposed here for studying trust, but they may also, in combination, allow for creation of robust validated measures which are lacking in conversational HCI in general [2].…”

“…With speech widely used as a primary interface modality in a number of applications and devices (e.g. Siri, Google Assistant, Amazon Echo) it is imperative that we develop an understanding of the mechanisms that drive language choices in HMD interactions [13]. Here we explore how a dimension of humanness, namely accent, may act as a cue to partner modeling and how this in turn may impact language choices in HMD.…”
