The state of Danish nursing ethnographic research: flowering, nurtured or malnurtured – a critical review

Abstract: Evidence exists that Danish nursing scholars' body of knowledge nurtures the ethnographic methodology mainly by the same few authors; however, whether this is an expression of a deliberate strategy or malnutrition in the form of lack of knowledge of other methodological options appears yet unanswered.

“…Question 6 requesting the researcher to locate oneself culturally or theoretical, was only done by nearly half of the studies [8,9,14,[22][23][24][25]. These results based on a critical appraisal contributed with an additional insight in the reflexive nature or the rigor of the study and the primary study author's reflections (or missing reflections) of their own relationship to the actual research setting [28,29]. The findings illustrate the SOs' experiences of their transitions influenced as they are by the organizational culture during hospitalization and discharge and the psycho-social and existential issues within this period of time.…”

Overall, the lack of arguments for the selection of methodology and self-reflection on the researcher’s influence contributes to the descriptions of Uhrenfeldt [43], who identified weaknesses in this area, even in qualitative research.…”

“…The design of the study was based on narrative ethnography, focusing on both narratives and the social context that condition narrative production [26]. In nursing research, ethnographic design has been used in the study of human actions and cultures [28]. The argument for using narrative ethnography is that it allows us to move attention beyond the stories to the narrative practice of storytelling and thereby explore what conditions stories, how they are used and with what consequences.…”
