The state and future of emergency medicine in Macedonia

Abstract: Most of the surveyed hospitals are capable of providing essential diagnostic tests, but very few are able to do so at the point or time of presentation. While emergency medical services (EMS) have improved system-wide, emergent care interventions by EMS and within all hospitals remain limited. Further system-wide acute and emergency care improvements are forthcoming.

“…The World Health Organization (WHO) in a systematic review of 59 low- and middle- income countries emphasizes the ongoing need to strengthen triage as a crucial requirement for efficient resource allocation and effective emergency intervention [ 3 ]. In upper middle-income countries such as Serbia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), the demand for emergency care has been growing, and the need for continuous strengthening of emergency care systems has been recognized [ 4 , 5 , 6 ]. The Clinical Centre of Serbia (CCS) located in Belgrade is a 3500-bed medical university center that serves the population of Belgrade and larger Serbia.…”
