The SST-1M project for the Cherenkov Telescope Array

Abstract: The SST-1M project, run by a Consortium of institutes from Czech Republic, Poland and Switzerland, has been proposed as a solution for implementing the small-size telescope array of the southern site of the Cherenkov Telescope Array. The technology is a pathfinder for efficient production of cost-effective imaging air Cherenkov telescopes. We report on the main system features and recent upgrades, the performances validation and the operation campaign carried out in 2018.

“…The SST-1M camera [6] is a SiPM-based Cherenkov camera for the SST-1M telescope [7]. It consists of 1296 hexagonal SiPMs from Hammamatsu (S10943-3739(X)) connected to a frontend electronics for signal shaping and amplification designed at the University of Geneva [8].…”

“…During the 2018 operation of the telescope, high night-sky background conditions of 600 MHz on average per pixel were observed [7]. On top of the high night-sky background level, external parasitic light from the surrounding inhabited area perturbed the observations.…”

“…For the SST, three different proposals exist: a single mirror dish (SST-1M, [9]), with a prototype built in Krakow, Poland; a dual-mirror design dubbed GCT, with a prototype in Meudon, France; and a dual-mirror design dubbed ASTRI [10], with a prototype in Sicily, Italy. Compact SST cameras will be equipped with photosensors based on Silicon photomultipliers (see e.g.…”

“…SST-1M was developed as a prototype of a Small-Sized Telescope for the Cherenkov Telescope Array [1], designed for observations of the gamma-ray induced atmospheric showers for energies above 3 TeV. The SST-1M design is based on Davies-Cotton concept with a 4-m multisegment mirror dish composed of 18 hexagonal facets [2]. The telescope is equipped with an innovative camera which features a fully digital readout and trigger system, called DigiCam [3] and adopts silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) as light sensing technology.…”
