The Spot‐the‐Word test: A robust estimate of verbal intelligence based on lexical decision

Abstract: The development of a test aimed at estimating premorbid intelligence is described. The test, Spot-the-Word, involves presenting the subject with pairs of items comprising one word and one non-word, and requiring the subject to identify the word. Data show that performance correlates highly with verbal intelligence as estimated by Mill Hill Vocabulary score and by performance on the National Adult Reading Test (NART). Performance does not decline with age, in contrast to an associated test of verbal recognition… Show more

“…Yet, additional analyses with vocabulary as proxy of verbal intelligence (Baddeley et al, 1993;Bastin et al, 2012) did not reveal any significant relationships (data not shown). Finally, we cannot exclude that the differences in data acquisition protocols between two centers have influenced our PET findings.…”

“…The 'Spot the word' test (Baddeley et al, 1993) was used as an index of premorbid IQ. The participants also performed an additional associative learning task while in the scanner, details of which are reported elsewhere (Morgan et al, 2010).…”

“…At the screening interview, the premorbid IQ of each participant was also assessed by the 'Spot the Word' test (Baddeley et al, 1993), an estimate of verbal intelligence based on lexical decision; trait dissociation was assessed by the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES, Bernstein and Putnam, 1986).…”
