The spontaneous reporting of adverse drug reactions by nurses.

Abstract: In an attempt to improve the low reporting rate of adverse drug reactions (ADR) we examined the potential for hospital nurses to report ADRs through a spontaneous 'yellow card' system. Over 14 months 100 cards were received (compared with 28 cards from doctors). Although reports from doctors for the same period were of a more substantial nature, nurses nevertheless reported many life threatening (17%) or moderately severe (76%) reactions. “…Therefore it is logical and essential to involve nurses and encourage them to contribute to the ADR reporting system. 2,5 Our study has found moderate knowledge regarding ADR reporting, poor knowledge of ADR burden and poor practice. The average knowledge score of the respondents was 43% on ADR reporting and 16.5% on ADR burden, indicating that there is still much to be done to educate the nurses regarding ADR reporting.…”

“…They are known to have an important role in ADR reporting in hospitals. 2 Thus, their level of awareness regarding ADRs, beliefs, opinions and attitudes towards reporting, the difficulties of spontaneous reporting of ADRs that they face will have an impact on the rate of reporting. Hence this study was conducted to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice patterns of nursing faculty and students towards ADR reporting and also to determine the barriers for reporting ADR.…”

“…However, ADR reporting practices among nurses is very poor as demonstrated from earlier studies. [20][21][22] In our hospital, none of the nurses had ever reported an ADR even though 26 nurses had identified ADRs in the past.…”
