The spectrum of clinical biomarkers in severe malaria and new avenues for exploration

Abstract: Globally, malaria is a public health concern, with severe malaria (SM) contributing a major share of the disease burden in malaria endemic countries. In this context, identification and validation of SM biomarkers are essential in clinical practice. Some biomarkers (C-reactive protein, angiopoietin 2, angiopoietin-2/1 ratio, platelet count, histidine-rich protein 2) have yielded interesting results in the prognosis of Plasmodium falciparum severe malaria, but for severe P. vi… Show more

“…Development of point-of-care tests based on biomarkers could be promising approach. We recently proposed a simple theoretical framework for identifying, evaluating and validating diagnostic, therapeutic prognostic and predictive biomarkers for malaria, and these could be translated to MiP ( 147 ). Longley et al ( 148 ) proposed an interesting approach based on serological markers to detect recent Pv infection.…”

“…There is paucity of data on biological activities of green MNPs in Cameroon where vector-borne diseases such as malaria are causes of concern (Lehman et al, 2018;Antonio-Nkondjio et al, 2019;Mbohou et al, 2019). In the present study, silver NPs were synthesized using leaves of Alchornea cordifolia (AC-AgNPs), optimized, characterized and evaluated for hemocompatibility and lethal activity against Plasmodium falciparum-Pf (the main and deadliest human malaria species) (Kojom Foko et al, 2021;Kojom Foko et al, 2022b;World Health Organization, 2022), and three mosquito species, i.e., Anopheles stephensi, Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes aegypti, involved in human transmission of parasites and viruses (dengue, Zika, malaria and lymphatic filariasis) Wang et al, 2017;Patil and Chandrasekaran, 2020). Alchornea cordifolia Schumach.…”

“…In diagnosing and managing malaria, various biomarkers have been identified to characterize the disease's severity. These biomarkers included C-reactive protein (CRP), Angiopoietin 2 (Ang-2), Ang-2/1 ratio, Plasmodium falciparum histidine-rich protein (PfHRP2), and platelet count 7 9 .…”
